The Story of Miles’

On Sunday, September 11^th, I woke to the sound of my dog, Miles, screeching in pain. I ran outside to find him dragging his hind legs in circles and falling over. He was rushed to the vet who discovered his disc had ruptured, pinching his spinal cord. The surgeon recommended an emergency operation or that he be put down. He survived and recovered from surgery, but after several months he is still unable to walk.

The costs of Mile’s surgery and treatments have cumulatively set me back about $5,000 dollars. I need to pay off this debt and continue with his rehabilitation.

Miles is a happy puppy. He loves to play, cuddle and bark with his brother. There is no way I would consider putting him down. He is only five and not in pain or suffering. However, the bills are adding up and it is tough emotionally and physically to care for Miles. He has to be come with me to work and be constantly monitored because he chews on his legs, tail and penis. I still have to express his bladder and hold him up to poop since he can not go on his own.

He is currently undergoing acupuncture therapy which is not cheap but the treatments have allowed him to gain some feeling and sensation. The hair on his back now stands up and he barks when he needs to go outside. We want to continue treatment and start doing rehab again.

Don’t break the bank, all I am asking for is a couple of bucks and help spreading the word. If you have a lot of money to donate, may I suggest Austin Pets Alive and the Town Lake Animal Shelter. There is also an Austin Dachshund Rescue group if you are a fan of the weenies.
