Terp Fiddy Tewnz of 2014: 20-11

top50Since 2002, I have obsessively tracked and categorized the music. It started as a way to share the songs and artists I discovered while working at a college radio station. I would rip audio files, make quarterly Windows Media playlists and burn CD’s for friends. When I transferred over to iTunes, I began to make meticulous quarterly and year-end mixes. In 2012, I moved over to Spotify and starting doing monthly “Mixtapes” and year end countdowns.

50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-11 | 10-1

These are not necessarily the best or most popular or commercially successful songs. They certainly anything we play on 93.7 KLBJ. These are the songs, that when I go back and listen to them, transport me to another time. They are the songs that have left a lasting impact. They are my memories, emotions and stories from the past year.

Music is the soundtrack to our lives and this is where my movie started.

20) Son Lux – Alternate World (Alternate Age)

There was a time when I discouraged adding remixes to lists. I was, however, young and foolish then.

19) Sylvan Esso – Uncatena

Stumbled across this song by chance and was pleasantly surprised to discover it was by an artist I had already been listening to heavily.

18) Action Bronson – Easy Rider

This fucking song though. A perfect summertime jam to cruise to, Bronson’s Easy Rider was easily one of my top hip-hop singles of the year. Listneing to it just makes you feel that much more kewl.

17) Banks – Goddess

The self titled track from Banks’ debut album tells the story of a dude who fucked it all up. What a dingus!

16) Jamie xx – Girl

The beat-making DJ behind The xx released several new singles this year and went on tour across the US, even stopping by Austin. Girl was my favorite to come form the remix master.

15) Broken Bells – Perfect World

Another wonderful song to come from Danger Mouse & James Mercer’s After the Disco. Listen all throughout to properly capture the feel.

14) Future Islands – Doves

Have you ever seen someone hurting and just wanted to take the pain away? Send them this song. It’s a lazy way to say you care while actually trying to help.

13) Tom Vek – Broke

I was unfamiliar with Tom Vek until I discovered Luck in September.

12) tUnE-yArDs – Real Thing

When I first heard this song (all the way through) I was convinced it was top five. However, I either played it too much or fell in love with several other songs. The group had a break-out year anchored by energetic performances and jams like this.

11) Sylvan Esso – Hey Mami

A dear friend sent me this song after purchasing us tickets to their show in Austin. I spent the rest of the summer listening to Sylvan Esso, even declaring their debut album my favorite of the year.

In addition to several great concerts I was also lucky enough to see a lot of comedy that came through Austin this year. Joe Rogan, Natasha Leggero, Joey Diaz and many more. Here are a few shows that stood out for me in 2014, including my it three.

St. Vincent – SXSW

Flaming Lips – X-Games COTA

Broken Bells – ACL Fest

3) Future Islands – Mohawk

2) Sylvan Esso – Emos

1) Mogwai – Emos

My ears were ringing for days after finally witnessing the amazing, loud and post rock greatness of Mogwai. This was by far, the best show I watched in 2014. I’d write about the other ones but you don’t give a shit anyhow. Here’s a shitty iPhone video to give you an idea of how great it was:

50-41 [and the top songs of years past]

40-31 [and the top albums of 2014]

30-21 [and the songs that just missed the cut]

20-11 [and the top concerts of 2014]

10-1 [and my final thoughts]
