Since 2002, I have obsessively tracked and categorized the music I listen to. It started as a way to share the songs and artists discovered while working in college radio with friends. I would regularly rip audio files, make quarterly Windows Media playlists and even burn CD’s.
I hope you enjoy listening to the soundtrack of my 2015!
30-21 [and the other songs]
Unlike past years, so much more of the music I consumed came from other genres or years. Take 2014, for example, I started the countdown with nearly one hundred of my favorite songs. In 2013 it was around 90 and 110 in 2012. However, my 12 monthly MixTapes had dozens more songs than in previous years. Meaning, for whatever reason, I was not listening to as much new stuff as I usually do.
Anyhow, what follows are the mid section of top songs from 2015 along with my most streamed and my top pop/hip-hop songs.
30) Alabama Shakes – Don’t Wanna Fight
Sound and Color | March MixTape
I remember my co-worker Kristen jamming this so loudly in the KGSR studio that I could hear it down the hall. Been a fan since!
29) Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Necessary Evil
Multi-Love | November MixTape
The first track to make the list from my #4 favorite album of the year was something I discovered while watching Unknown Mortal Orchestra play at AC Fest.
28) BOOTS – Teen Reader
Motorcycle Jesus | October MixTape
While wondering around ACL Fest, on shrooms (and with a different ex girlfriend) I stumbled upon BOOTS setting up to perform. We decided to stay and were both pleasantly surprised! I even made sure to see them again the next weekend. Give this slow building track a listen to all the way through to the end!
27) ODESZA – Bloom
In Return | November MixTape
Since February, I have been listening to ODESZA in pretty heavy rotation (maybe second only to two other artists). The DJ duo includes horns, guitars and many other live instruments into their set. Bloom reminds me of watching their amazing show at Fun Fun Fun Fest.
26) Purity Ring – begin again
another eternity | February MixTape
This is generally regarded as the second best song on another eternity by critics but it’s only the first of Purity Ring’s sophomore album to crack into my list.
25) Father John Misty – True Affection
I Love You, Honeybear | October MixTape
I had the pleasure f seeing Father John Misty at ACL Fest twice this year and was more than pleased with his sets. My favorite songs off the new album (which I had to record a clip of in order to remember) were the title track and of course, this one:
24) Caribou – Dive
Our Love | May MixTape
Dive was one of the many songs littered on the break-up heavy MixTapes that went from March – September. Though it came out in 2014, I didn’t really start listening to this particular track from Caribou’s wonderful Our Love until early 2015.
23) BenZel – Just a Thought
Men | August MixTape
Just a thought is another “break-up(ish)” track I discovered this year that came from 2014.
22) Hippie Sabotage – Your Soul
Men | March MixTape
Had I known there would be so many “break-up(ish)” songs from 2014 on this part of the list, I might of dropped a few of them. Well, definitely not this one. I discovered Hippie Sabotage while on a ski trip at the end of February and have been hooked on them ever since!
21) Portico (feat Joe Newman) – 101
Living Fields | July MixTape
I had originally thought this was a new alt-J song (it is Joe Newman’s vocals after all) but was thrilled to discover a new band instead.

THE OTHER SONGS
Dozens of other songs were perhaps played more than the preceding ones but again, they didn’t quite fit my loose criteria for genre or release date. Again, I recommend you follow me on Spotify if you happen to jive with what you’ve heard so far.
Most Streamed “Others” of 2015
These are a few songs I listened to A LOT (according to Spotify) but didn’t come out this year (1-5).
Top in Pop
I don’t usually include pop songs in my lists nor do I regularly track them. However, this year there were a lot of great artists on the airwaves and being shoved down our face (and real talk, The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face is the best song of 2015 and any other list maker that says differently should be questioned).
10) Justin Bieber, Skrillex & Diplo – Where Are U Now
9) Cherub – Doses & Mimosas
8) The Weeknd – The Hills
7) Future – Fuck up Some Commas
6) Rhianna – Bitch Better Have My Money
5) Drake – Hotline Bling
4) Kendrick Lamar – King Kunta
3) Drake – Know Yourself
2) Major Lazer ft Mo – Lean On
1) Weeknd – I Can’t Feel My Face
