Top Fifty Songs of 2015: 10-01

10-1

50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-11 | 10-1

Since 2002, I have obsessively tracked and categorized the music I listen to. It started as a way to share the songs and artists discovered while working in college radio with friends. I would regularly rip audio files, make quarterly Windows Media playlists and even burn CD’s.

For the last few years Spotify and YouTube have been my main source for listening to music and organizing monthly “Mixtapes.”

I hope you enjoy listening to the soundtrack of my 2015!

10-1 [and my final thoughts]

Well. Another year in the soundtrack of my life has gone by. I’ve gotten older and time keeps moving faster but the importance of music stays the same.

Over the past year, I have fallen in love, had my heart broken, traveled, moved, dealt with a sick dog, had ups, downs and lived an adventure.

If you have read along, you undoubtedly know the top influencing factor behind many – if not most – of these songs.

One can only hope that as a new year approaches, the music that comes along will positively motive us towards better things and help us let go of the past.

10) Tame Impala – Let It Happen

Currents | April MixTape
Let it Happen was one of my first front runners for song of the year back when I heard it in April. It’s seven and-a-half minutes of psychedelic fun that’s meant to be listened to loudly!

09) Grimes – Flesh Without Blood

Art Angels | October MixTape
I guess you could call this a breakout song for Grimes (though I’ve been a fan for quite sometime). Not exactly sure where I first heard Flesh Without Blood but I listened to it on repeat near the end of October and then finally got into the rest of Art Angels.

08) ODESZA (remix of Zhu) – Faded

Faded, The Remixes | February MixTape
Another song from my February MixTape and Ski-Trip. This remix of Faded is a perfect ‘getting ready to go out song’ and one of my favorites from the early part of 2015.

07) Hippie Sabotage (remix of NJOMZA) – Ridin Solo

Sunny |  May MixTape
At some point I begun to feel some anger and resentment over the pending loss of a relationship. This was one of the songs that kept coming up and I would play over and over again.

06) Purity Ring – stranger than earth

another eternity | September MixTape
September was a strange time. I was in the midst of a bender, had been traveling, working hard, going out a lot and was trying my best to move on. Purity Ring’s another eternity (and the songs of the September MixTape) were constants in the background this summer.

05) Major Lazer (feat Wild Belle) – Be Together

Peace is the Mission | June MixTape
At the end of May I saw a retweet from Major Lazer announcing some new music with this YouTube clip attached. Having a mutual love of Wild Belle, I sent it to my ex-ex girlfriend who I hadn’t communicated with in a long time (without having immediately listened to it). That action, perhaps fueled by the lyrics and our checkered past, started up a text conversation. Our odd, on-off again, communication continues to this day.

This also happened to be a day when my ex returned to town and wanted to hang out – as friends for the first time – which just really caught me off guard and hurt.

04) Sufjan Stevens – Fourth of July

Carrie & Lowell | May MixTape
The first time I heard this magnificent piece was while seeing Sufjan Stevens at the Bass Concert Hall in May. That night it brought tears to my eyes as it did several other times. At the end of June, I thought my dog was going to die and this song continually played in my head. Luckily, emergency neck surgery saved him and I am still able to listen to Fourth of July.

03) ODESZA (feat Zyra) – It’s Only

In Return | February MixTape
You know that ski-trip I keep mentioning? That moment I fondly reflect upon as being the zenith of my year? Well, while in Colorado with my girlfriend I kept getting an eerie feeling. Something was telling me “she’s not as into you as you are her.”

Turns out, this feeling was correct. Though the lyrical content of this song is not how I feel – the mood seemed to fit and foreshadow the end of the relationship.

02) Tame Impala – Eventually

Currents | April MixTape
I – can’t even – lie and pretend that the majority of these songs were not inspired by a break-up. They were and I’m sorry to keep bringing it up. Believe me, it sounds pathetic but I am just trying to recall the feelings I had behind the songs at the time. So yes, a good chunk of the music I’ve listed is important because of the effect other people have on me (to be fair, the same goes for previous years).

I wish with all of my heart I knew how to make music and could create something that would make the pain that comes with our lives go away. But I can’t.

I heard this song before we broke-up and thought it kind of summed things up. No matter what we are going through, what we’ve done wrong, what ever is happening… we will all get through it. Eventually.

01) Purity Ring – dust hymm

another eternity | September MixTape
I’m not even sure why this is the number one song. Maybe it’s because it was the first track atop my bender ending September MixTape. Or maybe it’s just the one song by the one artist I listened to the most over 2015 (it was my most streamed song according to Spotify).

Either way, dust hymn is my favorite song from 2015. It’s sad, beautiful and powerful. It feels important and unlike the other songs on this list, it makes me sit and reflect in an omnipotent manner rather than wallow in a lost moment.

Now comes the part of my movie where I walk off into 2016, with the final song from the 2015 soundtrack playing….

Thank you so much for checking out my list! I’ll be putting these songs in order on YouTube and Spotify over the next few days so feel free to follow me there.

Please let me know what you thought of my list and be sure to share!
