Since 2002, I have obsessively tracked and categorized the music I listen to. It started as a way to share the songs and artists I discovered while working in college radio with friends. I would regularly rip audio files, make quarterly Windows Media playlists and even burn CD’s.
Now-a-days , I use Spotify and YouTube to organize these MixTapes. Still, at the end of every year, I track my stats, use a little (okay a lot) of emotion, and craft a list. It usually takes several drafts and a lot of reorganizing but at some point I end up with this. Thank you for following along!
This was a rough year personally, financially, and creatively. Good thing we all had some music to help us through it! Join me on a journey that was the soundtrack of my life during 2017.
50) DJ Shadow – The Mountain Will Fall
I like to start off every year’s list with a bottle rocket and this new one from DJ Shadow was actually my first song of the year on my January MixTape.
49) Wolf Parade – Baby Blue
It wouldn’t be a year-end list without something that had Dan Boeckner in it. Wolf Parade have returned with a new album and this one happened to be my favorite.
48) Chelsea Wolfe – 16 Pysche
Blazing rock I discovered and can not stop listening to.
47) Hamilton Leithauser – Heartstruck (Wild Hunger) ft. Angel Olsen
These two amazing and unique artists take us back to ‘1960’s’ Marfa with this love song.
46) HEALTH x NO LIFE – Hard to Be God
HEATLH had my favorite set at 2016’s Sound on Sound Fest. Awesome to hear this collaboration.
45) Vök – Lightening Storm
Some good chill wave from Iceland’s Vök.
44) Broken Social Scene – Halfway Home
Mixed reviews for BSS’s latest but I enjoyed it! Especially this song.
43) Flume – Hyperreal feat. Kučka
The final chunk of Flume’s 2016 breakthrough album Skin.
42) Mogwai –Party in the Dark
Whaaat? Post Rocker’s Mogwai with a vocal track?
41) The National – Guilty Party
It was a big year for The National and their wonderful new album Sleep Well Beast. Like many of their new songs, they are long and slowly build so listen through to the end!
40) Spoon – Hot Thoughts
Turn on the radio in February and you would inevitably hear this one from Spoon. The momentum of this song laid the groundwork for a big SXSW and successful release of their album Hot Thoughts.
39) Hundred Waters – Blanket Me
It was a tough year and music like this helped ease the pain.
38) Walker Lukens – Aint Got A Reason
My Austin man crush hit it with another great song and solid album! Look for him to break out even bigger in 2018.
37) Cults – Gilded Lily
These super cool surf rockers surprisingly flew far under the radar this year.
36) Future Islands – Ran
It’s going to be hard to ever follow up with another standout single like 2014’s Seasons but Ran comes close!
35) Toro y Moi – Omaha
This one sat in the background and worked its way up to being one of my most played songs of the year.
34) Sleigh Bells – Rainmaker
Another artist, that in my opinion, went under the radar this year despite a solid album.
33) Grizzly Bear – Three Rings
These guys follow up a long layoff with another solid album that leaves me listening again and again. Three Weeks happened to be my favorite from Painted Ruins.
32) Purity Ring – Asido
Last time I saw Purity Ring, they announced plans to take time off. Then, in July, they dropped this song and disappeared again. The release (meant as a gift to fans?) coincided with the five year anniversary of Shrines.
31) LCD Sound System – I used to
It was hard to narrow down my favorite tracks from american dream and slap them onto a list but this one stood out. It just sounds so fucking cool!
30) Keep Shelly in Athens – Dark Light
Don’t scrub through this or you will miss the striking vocals of Jessica Bell. This song starts one way and then takes you another so give it time!
29) Hundred Waters – Fingers
Another sweet and melodic tune from Hundred Waters to put you in a good, mellow mood.
28) Son Lux – Dream State
This year Son Lux released a series of solid singles. Though this is the only one making my list, I recommend you check them all out!
27) Mogwai – Coolverine
Classic Mogwai. New Album. If you are into instrumentals and Post Rock, you should like this!
26) Hot Sugar – Fairies Whisper
Damn what a sweet beat! Slap the headphones on and turn this up.
