Top 50 Songs of 2019

2019 brought on some of the absolute biggest changes in my life and this was the soundtrack to all the ups, downs, and in-betweens.

Each month (for years) I have made a mixtape of new songs I discovered during that month. At the end of the year I like to list my top 50 according to play count, culture & personal significance, and my gut (well, ears).

I hope you take the time to listen to these (Spotify embed is below) and share with a friend or at least let me know you enjoyed it or found something new you loved!

(Pardon me if I come off like someone pretending to be a music writer with hip keywords. I just wanted to write a little blurb about each song and just went with what came in my head).

50) M83 – Temple of Sorrow

I always like to start this list with some big, weird powerful song. This one seems perfect to kick off my personal best of 2019

49) Cage the Elephant – Social Cues

I was not a fan of Cage the Elephant. But things change? Thanks to this song (and their incredible live performances) I have revisited and rediscovered them. I also hold this song dear because I got a new radio job this year and this was one of the first songs going in to my first break.

48) FKA twigs – home with you

I was so excited when FKA twigs came out with new music but nothing really stuck with me outside of this song. I am sure things will change as I listen more.

47) Karen O, Danger Mouse – Woman

Thoroughly enjoyed this entire album. This song stuck with me the most.

46) Bon Iver – Hey, Ma

Solid track that eventually grew on me.

45) Bombay Bicycle Club – Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)

Sweet and fun song from a group I haven’t heard from in a while.

44) Twin Oaks – So Close

I almost deleted it from the list. Then I listened to it again and the ending really hooked me.

43) Mesita – Blackwhite

42) Apparat – DAWAN

Apparat makes some tight ass electronic music and this song inso exception.

41) Walker Lukens – I’ll Take the Dog

Love me some Walker Lukens and love his new album. This song stuck with me the most this year.

40) Lana Del Rey – Fuck it I love you

She’s just so damn cool and this song just makes me feel like I am her cool friend.

39) Wolf Parade – Against the Day

Speaking of cool, Dan Boeckner can’t do wrong and it is awesome to hear more from Wolf Parade.

38) girl in red – bad idea!

From producing in her bedroom to getting spins on the radio Norway’s girl in red is going to be the next big thing in Indie music.

37) Public Memory – Before I forget

I’ve been a fan of Brooklyn’s Public Memory from the first moment I heard a sample of one of their first songs. This one tops their 2019 efforts, look for more in 2020.

36) Angel Olsen – Impasse

Gah I am over the moon for Angel Olsen. More on her later.

35) Clams Casino – Rune

Clammy Clams is the best producer and beat maker in the game.

34) Hot Chip – Melody of Love

Their new album is called A Bath Full of Ecstasy so think about that while listening to this song.

33) Tycho, Saint Sinner – Japan

Great collaboration from sonic sound makers Tycho and electro-vibist Saint Sinner.

32) Foster the People – Imagination

Always fun, Foster the People popped back into my radar (and many others) with this jam.

31) Metronomy – Lately

They are known for fun songs and cool music videos. This one is a little more serious than everything else on their latest album and worth noting inside your ear.

30) Shlohmo – Send Help

Is he post rock, hip hop, elm or something else? Shlohmo is all and more.

29) HÆLOS – Another Universe

I had the pleasure of seeing HÆLOS live this year and they lived up to my expectations.

28) MONO – Meet Us Where the Night Ends

Finally some post rock on this list! Japan’s MONO deliver with this nine minute headphone track.

27) Four Tet – Teenage Bird Song

Still got those headphones on? Check Out this heady beat from London’s Kieran Hebden aka Four Ten

26) Local Natives – Megaton Mile

Just wouldn’t be a year end list without a Local Natives song on it.

Deep breath. Here we go. Into the top 25. My most played, most repeated and most liked songs of 2019.

25) Cherry Glazer – Daddi

TECHNICALLY this came out at the end of 2018 but I played it heavily in 2019 so here it sits.

24) Caribou – You and I

Even by Caribou’s standards this one is weird and all over the place but I am sure it would be higher up on my list had it not just come out.

23) Angel Olsen – Lark

Angel Olsen is the embodiment of a 1950’s Nashville singer-songwriter who live on a futuristic colony in space. Make sense?

22) STRFKR – Fantasy

I listened to so much STRFKR this year that I didn’t even realize this song was brand new until making this list.

21) Foals – Exit

Foals knows how to churn out indie radio hits and they started the year of right with Exit.

20) BANKS – Gimme

I wan’t thrilled on BANKS departure from trip-hop to pop but this song is a wonderful comprise of her old and new sound.

19) The National – Light Years

If you have ever read any of these lists you know that every single year I have several National songs and a few usually end up in the top two. Not this year. Though I wasn’t as excited as everyone else seemed to be with I am Easy to Find, I still enjoyed it and found this song, Light Years, to be my favorite.

18) Interpol – The Weekend

Another regular on my year end lists, Interpol pops in at #19 with The Weekend. It starts off okay but really grows as the song goes on.

17) Russian Circles – Arluck

Fuck I love playing this one loud! Especially that guitar churning part that builds into a heavy post rock style loud ending.

16) Grimes, i_o – Violence

It weirds me out that people seem to only know Grimes because she dated Elon Musk. She’s been cranking out good music for years!

15) Yppah – Shot in the Sun

If there is any ‘shroomin’ song on my list this would be it. Visuals really kick in about halfway through.

14) HEALTH – Strange Days (1999)

From festivals, to film soundtracks and even video games; HEALTH’s music has been everywhere.

13) Scratch Massive, Toby Ernest – Numero 6

I honestly do not know much about these artists but according to the numbers, I listened to this song a lot last year.

12) Röyksopp – In The End

This song was not created this year but was released by the duo known as Röyksopp along with many other tracks under the name Lost Tapes.

11) Bonobo – Linked

Yes, I like a lot of EDM but this song is perfect for sitting at work with your headphones in and trying to crank through your day and stay upbeat,

10) Grimes – So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth

Wow and I thought Violence was her best song this year. Check out this amazingly dramatic tune from Grimes and tell me if you feel the same.

09) Calexico, Iron & Wine – The Bitter Suite (Pájaro / Evil Eye / Tennessee Train)

One lyric that stuck with me this year came from this song: “…that was when I told her I’d give her anything. Anything wasn’t enough to make her stay.” This three part song takes you on a ride so sit back and enjoy!

08) Röyksopp – I Just Don’t Understand You

Another one from Lost Tapes that I apparently listened to A LOT this year.

07) James Blake (feat. Travis Scott and Metro Boomin) – Mile High

Damn this small British man can boom out some amazing vocals and dope ass beats.

06) Broken Bells – Good Luck

“We see the face of evil on the news tonight… but have we ever really lived in better times?” Powerful lyrics from James Mercer and an amazing return in 2019 with Broken Bells’ Good Luck.

05) Yeasayer – 24-Hour Hateful Live

More political than the last song, Yeasayer goes right on and says what we are all thinking with this shit news cycle.

04) Hayden Thorpe – Love Crimes

I just discovered this song a month ago and yes, it is that good as to leap directly into my top five.

03) Mor Mor – Outside

Another artist I discovered this year, Mor Mor actually had another song I played more in 2019 but this one actually came out recently. Anyhow, Outside is just an emotionally powerful song that just builds and adds layers until the ending.

02) Metronomy – Walking in the Dark

Until yesterday this song was in the number three spot but was my number two most played of 2019. I kept going back and forth but ultimately went with my ears (and the stats). Metronomy are so much fun and that oozes out in their performances and music videos. I don’t know exactly what it is about this song but something really made it get stuck in my head last year.

Here we go. Number one. It wasn’t even really close or a competition. This was my favorite song. It was my most played song. It is the best song of 2019.

01) Angel Olsen – All Mirrors

I discovered Angel Olsen thanks to my now fiancé and instantly fell in love. Her style, her music videos, her live performances – all incredible.

When I first heard this song, I envisioned standing next to the stage at a music festival watching as the wind blew Angel Olsen’s hair and she slowly approached the mic to sing this slow, heartfelt song that is essentially a break from her more well known songs. Then I listened again and again. And again. Within a day I realized just how incredibly powerful All Mirrors is and knew instantly this would end up as my top song of 2019.

As if her vocals, the slow build and strings aren’t enough; check out the music video.

Thank you for checking out my list! Be sure to sub on my Spotify for monthly new music mixtapes and to check out my other lists.

SINCE 2002, I HAVE OBSESSIVELY TRACKED AND CATEGORIZED THE MUSIC I LISTEN TO. IT STARTED AS A WAY TO SHARE THE SONGS AND ARTISTS I DISCOVERED WHILE WORKING IN COLLEGE RADIO WITH FRIENDS. I WOULD REGULARLY RIP AUDIO FILES, MAKE QUARTERLY WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYLISTS AND EVEN BURN CD’S.
NOW-A-DAYS , I USE SPOTIFY AND YOUTUBE  TO ORGANIZE THESE MIXTAPES. STILL, AT THE END OF EVERY YEAR,  I TRACK MY STATS, USE A LITTLE (OKAY A LOT) OF EMOTION, AND CRAFT A LIST. IT USUALLY TAKES SEVERAL DRAFTS AND A LOT OF REORGANIZING BUT AT SOME POINT I END UP WITH THIS. THANK YOU FOR FOLLOWING ALONG!
